One of the Automators partners needed a finance dashboard in Power BI that would analyse financial health of the business. The goal was to use this report for presentation to other partners, review financial results and trends.

Power BI
The key design principle that our Power BI consultants used for this finance dashboard in Power BI is consistency.
All the visuals were used consistently throughout the report. For example the line charts showing annual performance were placed consistently in bottom left corner of every page. Similarly the cards that summarised the key Power BI metrics were placed on top left on every page. Creating consistent page design enables the users to instantly recognise where to look for key insights as soon as they land on the page.
We also picked consistent colours e.g. income was shown in green, expenses in red and profit in blue on every page. This helped the users of our finance dashboard in Power BI to identify the key metrics without reading the labels.
This page of our finance dashboard in Power BI enables the management of the company to analyse whether they have sufficient cash reserves in the bank account.
A KPI for account balance was created. This KPI takes current account balance into account and subtracts planned expenses for future months.
The visual on the right shows that in 4 months the company will be out of cash assuming no revenue is generated.
Green colour means that there is enough cash for more than 3 months. Orange is for when there is enough cash for next 2 months and red is for when there is only cash for 1 month or less.
Income analysis is arguably the most important part of the finance dashboard in Power BI. Revenue is broken down by month and client. Income YTD is shown as well as income + forecast till the end of the year. There is also an option to filter by year and country
The client can click on a client name on the horizontal bar chart and see the income trend by month.
Analysing expenses on a finance dashboard in Power BI is also super important for service companies to ensure lean operation with minimum waste.
Expenses are broken down by month and type. There is also an option to filter them by year and country. Income YTD is shown as well as income + forecast till the end of the year
Finally, we analysed profitability on the finance dashboard in Power BI. This page gives additional perspective to the sales and expenses numbers by comparing them to each other.
There is a projection of profit by month based on projected income and expenses. Actual income, expenses and profit are shown on the same chart. Profit is broken down by project to show the most profitable projects. Profit is shown as a real number and as percent of revenue. There is also an option to filter by year and country.
